Ireland welcomed 10.6 million visitors last year, an increase of 6.9 per cent on the 9.93 million arrivals in 2017, according to latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

Ireland was the chosen destination for 10 per cent of all American visitors to Europe, and the US and Canada residents provided a dramatic 13.4 per cent increase with a total of 2.4 million trips in 2018.

Britons made up a third of the total with 3.8 million visits (a 0.8 per cent increase), while visitors from Europe increased by 9.5 per cent to 3.8 million.

There was a 4.2 per cent increase in the number of overseas trips made by Irish residents last year to 8.3 million.
